How can I get my computer working again?

Ok, so forgive me for being technologically retarded, but I need help. My computer was running at 100% for 30 minutes before I was able to do a system restore to get it back to a better state. Upon restarting, windows wouldn't get up and go. It transferred me to a screen saying to either perform Startup Recovery or start windows normally. Obviously starting it normally doesn't work, but neither does the Startup Repair. It goes to a black screen with nothing but the cursor. I have tried going the F8 route and trying for safe mode, but it won't go either. I suppose I should say it is windows 7 and it's on my laptop. It's a Toshiba Satellite C655-S5132. If that's important... Like I said, I'm less than technologically inclined. Any other information that would be deemed pertinent is probably something I don't know anything about. So I apologize for any lack thereof. My girlfriend is a techie, so I'm trying to enlist her assistance in the matter, but just in case, anything anyone out there could say that might help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
