How to improve PC gaming Performance?

Hi, im not really familiar with this techie stuff, but i want to improve my game play, as in higher fps better graphics etc.. i just want to know what to buy to improve this (graphics cards etc)? also i dont really know much about graphics cards.., so can you give me examples of some decent ones and what ever? :)
