How do i get internet in my apartment?

im trying to get wifi in my apartment, and have no idea what to do to get it. we have no internet what so ever in the apartment. ive looked up stuff about it, but am so confused. what exactly do i need to have wifi? im not a techie so please explain it to me in english. i also have an xbox 360 so would like a broadband connection but its not a requirement because i can get a wireless thingie for it for free.
