My disk cleanup take so long..?

ok I'm not a techie person so i have no idea really.. why is my disk clean up take so long? I haven't done disk cleanup for a very long time so is this normal? I mean is it normal to wait for like hours and hours? not minutes but actually hours? it's taking so long that I have to cancel it.. :( how can i speedup my cleaning?
