Why can't I zoom while recording?

Ah, I feel stupid since I'm usually good with techie stuff. I have a Sony touch screen digital camera, (I don't feel like going into specifics, mostly bc I don't know what model or whatever it is ;P) It works fine but it doesn't zoom in WHILE I'm recording. Grrr.... Can anyone help me with this?
